The Original Remedies

Fifty plants. Documented tradition. Graded evidence. The field guide to the home remedies that have a real record — by C.B. Light.

Full color, 7×10, 346 pages. Also in print: The Original Formula, our history of the plants behind ten everyday drugs.

Every remedy has a history.

Fifty plants with a documented record — identified by their field marks, prepared the way the old pharmacopoeias describe, and graded honestly against the modern monographs. Where the evidence is thin, the page says so. Where a plant was refused, the book says why. Every number traced to its source.

Each plant gets six full-color pages: a portrait and story, identification photographs with the dangerous look-alikes shown side by side, the numbers from the reference monographs, a follow-along kitchen page with household measures, the safety page, and a full-page botanical plate from the great nineteenth-century floras.

This is not a book that promises cures. It grades the record — tradition on one axis, modern evidence on the other — and it prints the weak files alongside the strong ones, because a book that only says yes is an advertisement.

The record stays public

This book documents traditional use and the published evidence about it. It is not medical advice, and nothing in it is a diagnosis, treatment, or cure for any condition.
